Unconditional Love

I thought I would write a post about unconditional love.

Here’s what Wikipedia’s definition of unconditional love is:

Unconditional love is known as affection without any limitations. This term is sometimes associated with other terms such as true altruism, complete love, or “mother’s love.” Each area of expertise has a certain way of describing unconditional love, but most will agree that it is that type of love which has no bounds and is unchanging. It is a concept comparable to true love, a term which is more frequently used to describe love between lovers. By contrast, unconditional love is frequently used to describe love between family members, comrades in arms and between others in highly committed relationships. An example of this is a parent’s love for their child; no matter a test score, a life changing decision, an argument, or a strong belief, the amount of love that remains between this bond is seen as unchanging and unconditional.

I think that’s a good definition.

I’m sure you have experienced this in many areas of your life, having either given unconditional love or received it or both. It’s also a key factor in helping a person heal.

I guess unconditional love can also be tied to forgiveness. When we make a mistake and someone forgives us, it’s because they know and understand, either from their own experiences or from the knowledge they have learned, from the good and the not-so-good things we do.

It’s also about unconditional love for ourselves. If we can love ourselves unconditionally, it is easier for us to love others unconditionally.

I think this is a cornerstone to the nature of our soul and life.

So here’s to Unconditional Love. May it always be present in our lives!
