Shopping for clothes can be a daunting task, especially when it feels like an endless hunt for the right fit, style, and color that suits you.
Especially as a woman navigating fashion in her 50s and beyond, it can often seem like a challenge to find clothes that fit your individuality without leaning towards styles meant for much younger or older age groups.
In this post, I’ll share tips from my experiences as a colour analyst and personal stylist to help you develop a shopping process that ensures success every time you step into a store.
1. Understanding Your Body Shape
The first and perhaps most significant step in making shopping less overwhelming is understanding your body shape. During my personal styling training, I discovered the importance of knowing which styles complement my body shape and reflect my personality. This is not about adhering to rigid rules but rather gaining a clearer understanding of what works for you. Knowing your body shape empowers you to navigate shops with a more focused approach, reducing the feelings of frustration or self-doubt.
Many women fall into the trap of blaming their bodies when a garment doesn’t fit right. It’s crucial to recognize that it’s not your body that’s the problem; it might simply be the garment’s design. Acknowledging this can be a game-changer, as it was for me. By understanding my body shape, I could quickly identify clothes that were likely to flatter me, streamlining my entire shopping process.
2. Finding Your Colors
In addition to body shape, knowing which colors complement your natural tones is an essential element of successful shopping. When you’re aware of the colors that suit you, you can easily filter out items that won’t work, saving both time and money. Shopping becomes more efficient and enjoyable when you’re confident that the colors you choose will enhance your appearance.
3. Defining Your Style Personality
Finally, understanding your style personality is a critical component of developing a wardrobe that feels authentically yours. Different people are drawn to different styles: some may prefer classic, timeless pieces, while others might lean towards feminine or boho looks. It’s worth spending time reflecting on the styles that resonate with you and make you feel happy and confident. As I’ve developed my own style over the years, I’ve found joy in wearing clothes that align with my personality, invoking a sense of comfort and satisfaction. This personal exploration is akin to Marie Kondo’s famous advice to keep only what sparks joy.
Incorporating these three aspects—understanding body shape, identifying suitable colors, and defining your style personality—can transform your shopping experience. By being mindful of these elements, you’ll not only make shopping more fun but also more meaningful as you curate a wardrobe that truly reflects who you are.
